Football Recruiting: Devon Allen and Texas

by 2013 Football Class

2013 four-star wide receiver Devon Allen is one of the fastest recruits in the nation, and he is one of the fastest track stars in Texas with a couple of state records under his belt for the 110 and  300m hurdles. Allen is a Phoenix, Arizona product who has interest in the Texas Longhorns, but Texas is not one of his offers. He is planning on an official visit to Texas during the season, with reports saying that he will visit a game against new Big 12 power West Virginia, or against a fellow in-state school in Baylor.

Devon Allen has received offers from Arizona State, Notre Dame, Arkansas, Michigan, Indiana, Michigan State, Ohio State, Stanford, UCLA, Oklahoma, Duke, Mississippi State, Illinois, Nebraska, Oregon State, Purdue, Tennessee, USC, Washington, Oklahoma State, and Vanderbilt in his recruitment.

At this point, UCLA, Arizona State, LSU, Texas, Arkansas, California, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Stanford, Washington, and Oregon are the 12 teams left with a viable chance of landing him; eight of those schools have offered.

An exceptionally fast receiver, Devon Allen is the 107th best recruit in the nation in our FanSided 150 rankings and is easily a top 15 receiver overall. As far as his in-state ranking, Allen is the third best recruit in Arizona. He has insane speed off the line of scrimmage and can burn defensive backs and take advantage of their mistakes. Allen does a great job of making catches in traffic, and the 6’1″, 190 pound receiver certainly makes up for a lack of strength. He rarely ever drops a pass, adds a dimension as a run blocker, and he is a smart receiver who can break down coverages with his well above-average route-running ability.

It is a bit surprising to see that Texas has not offered yet, because Devon Allen is clearly one of the best receivers in the country. Not only does he possess great speed, but he is also an elite pass-catcher who is smart, runs crisp routes, and he can block. This guy can make an immediate impact on a receiver corps for a big team, and his official visit to Austin will be a big one in the future.
