On April 30th, 2014 tight end Kalan Ritchie verbally committed to the South Carolina Gamecocks. Ritchie is ranked in the Top 20 in the state of South Carolina and among all tight ends.
The other teams that offered at Ritchie, but did not get his commitment were the Clemson Tigers, Connecticut Huskies, North Carolina Wolfpack, and Virginia Tech Hokies.
When it was time to make a decision Ritchie might have picked the closest school, but that was not the only reason for the 2014 recruit.
Another reason he chose the Gamecocks was wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator, Steve Spurrier Jr.. During his recruitment process, Ritchie formed a strong relationship with Spurrier Jr. and, when he made his decision to commit to South Carolina, Spurrier Jr. was the coach that Ritchie called.
Kalan Ritchie told 247Sports:
It’s really exciting once you do it. You kind of feel like a chill going through your body — not really a chill but it’s just that really good feeling. When you know you made a good decision, it’s like no regrets to it. I have no regrets over what decision I just made.
When it comes down to Kalan Ritchie, his best skills have to be both his frame and catching radius. According to 247Sports’ skills chart, Ritchie is listed at a nine in both categories.
In high school, Ritchie was used mostly as a run blocker, but that looks like it will change at South Carolina.
When asked about his role with the Gamecocks, Ritchie said:
They told me that I’m not going to be strictly a run-blocking tight end, I’m going to be a receiving tight end also.
The three-star recruit is currently ranked 15th in the state of South Carolina and 14th among tight ends by 247Sports.
