Nebraska Football Recruiting: Peyton Newell Names Top Six Schools

On Saturday at 6:00 CT, 2014 defensive tackle/tight end Peyton Newell announced his top six schools via twitter. The schools in his top six are the South Carolina Gamecocks, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Georgia Bulldogs, Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, and USC Trojans.

There should be no surprise that South Carolina and Nebraska are in Peyton Newell’s top six list because, according to 247 Sports, they are receiving the most interest from the 2014 prospect. The 247 Sports Crystal Ball has the Nebraska Cornhsukers as the 100% spot to land Newell.

Two surprises in Newell’s top six are the Georgia Bulldogs and USC Trojans.

Before his decision, it was projected that the Kansas native was interested in Oklahoma and N.C. State more than Georgia and USC. However, the Trojans and Bulldogs were the two teams to beat out the Sonners and Wolfpack.

Overall, Peyton Newell is being recruited as a defensive tackle. When it comes to the DT position, Newell is a player that contains size, a high motor, and, most importantly, strength. He stands at 6’2″ and weighs 272 pounds. He is also one of the strongest DTs in the Class of 2014.

As a DT, Newell recorded 61 tackles, 37 tackles-for-loss, ten sacks, five forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in 2012. As a TE, he recorded 162 receiving yards on fourteen receptions and three receiving touchdowns.

The four-star recruit is currently ranked 2nd in the state of Kansas, 19th among defensive ends, and 235th nationally among 2014 high school recruits by 247Sports.
