The Syracuse Orange landed a three-star commitment at the outside linebacker position yesterday in Lake Zurich, Illinois standout Colton Moskal, who once visited Syracuse in the spring. Moskal’s decision gives the Orange their fourth commit in the 2014 football class, but Syracuse still has a long way to go as ACC newcomers.
Moskal chose ‘Cuse over offers from the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Cincinnati Bearcats, and minor programs. He was starting to get interest from schools like in-state power Illinois, but Minnesota, Cincinnati, and Syracuse were his three biggest offers. The Wisconsin Badgers showed enough interest in Moskal to host him last month, but that never amounted to an offer from the Badgers. Minnesota, like Syracuse, offered before receiving a visit from Moskal in the spring, but he simply chose the ACC program/
It is certainly not a surprise to see that the Syracuse Orange have locked up a pledge from the three-star OLB, and this was predicted by 247Sports analyst Steve Wiltfong. Moskal gives Syracuse the 42nd-best recruit in the state of Illinois in the 247Composite, and he is also ranked by the 247Composite as the 55th-best inside linebacker. He can play either inside or outside at LB, but I view him as a better outside linebacker prospect due to his sub-4.6 speed and 6’0″, 204 pound frame. Moskal is a heady linebacker with adequate strength and the amount of quickness that makes me believe he can be a good coverage player as a 4-3 OLB in Syracuse’s scheme. Last season at Lake Zurich, Moskal recorded 98 tackles with 8.5 sacks, so he has plenty of playmaking ability as well and could be a threat to rush the passer. I see him as a “WILL” linebacker for the Orange.
