The Iowa Hawkeyes will host three-star tight end and strong-side defensive end recruit Freedom Akinmoladun today, but it is another Big Ten team that he recently visited which is in the best position to land Akinmoladun. The Nebraska Cornhuskers are the “clear leader” for Akinmoladun, according to HuskerOnline.com’s Mike Matya. The Grandview, Missouri standout visited Nebraska for its prestigious Big Red Weekend this weekend, and it had a huge effect on several recruits, including Akinmoladun. Nebraska certainly is in a clear lead for Akinmoladun, because all nine experts on 247Sports have shown Nebraska as the team to land him. However, watch closely for the Kansas State Wildcats, as they are also a school that Akinmoladun has interest in.
He has received other offers from the Illinois Fighting Illini and Kansas Jayhawks, but he should receive more offers as one of the top 25 tight end recruits in the country and one of the top ten prospects in the state of Missouri. The most important thing at this point, though, is that he has big offers from Kansas State and Nebraska, and that Nebraska looks to be in an excellent position to pick up a pledge from the three-star ATH.
Akinmoladun’s visit to Iowa today will be interesting, and we’ll see if LeVar Woods can get some ground in the effort to try and pull the 6’4″, 240 pound TE away from Nebraska. Lasts season, he caught 14 passes for 331 yards and also recorded 85 tackles with 15 tackles for loss and four sacks. At defensive end, Akinmoladun is an active, disruptive presence, and it will be interesting to see what position he plays at in college- DE or TE.
Illinois, by the way, hosted Akinmoladun back in the spring, but they are not considered to be a threat to land the three-star Grandview prospect over Nebraska or even Kansas State. Will more schools offer Akinmoladun? That depends on if he commits to Nebraska in the near future, but I see him waiting and getting a few more offers; we’ll see if potential offers or even today’s visit to Iowa slows down Nebraska’s momentum.
