2014 four-star offensive tackle Jamarco Jones will be making his college decision today, and the three finalists for his services are the Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan State Spartans, and Michigan Wolverines. Ohio State looks to be the team in the best position to land a commitment from Jones, and the Crystal Ball says that Ohio State is the clear favorite. All 36 recruiting experts on 247Sports have picked Ohio State as the team to land Jamarco Jones without either Michigan or Michigan State getting a sniff at a vote.
Michigan State actually looks to be in a better position than the rival Wolverines, but we’ve seen less surprising things than a top recruit spurning the experts top choice. I mean, look no further than Khairi Clark’s recent decision to choose the Florida Gators over the Miami Hurricanes shortly after naming his top six.
Jones is the latest elite prospect out of Chicagoland, and he checks in as the 55th-best recruit in our FanSided150 rankings. The 6’5″, 29o pound De La Salle Institute star is easily one of the best three recruits in the state of Illinois and a top five offensive tackle nationally. What impresses me the most about Jones- other than his size and strength- is his ability to pave the way for running backs with the ability of an elite guard. Jones’s run blocking is the best at the offensive tackle position in this class, and he is elite in every sense of the word. There isn’t a glaring hole in Jones’s game, and he would be a huge get for any of these three schools.
He visited Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State- in that order- on the 15th, 16th, and 17th of this month as his final unofficial visits to his three finalists. For my money, that’s the order of the schools in increasing chance of landing the touted tackle. Jones has a real mean streak to him when he plays, and that’s evident in his mauling run blocking. He’s an elite tackle prospect in every sense of the word, and it will be interesting to see if the Spartans can steal him away from OSU and Michigan. Actually, it would be more of a steal if Michigan snared Jones, especially with the Buckeyes regarded as the odds-on favorites.
Jones has visited Ohio State five times in the process, and it would be a surprise to see Jones commit to another school today. However, Michigan State has more than a fair shot at snagging Jones, and Michigan isn’t exactly a mere afterthought either. I think the hierarchy of the chances of those three is clearly defined, but each school definitely has a chance.
He will make his decision today at 2 p.m. ET at his school De La Salle Institute.
Prediction: Ohio State, with a degree of confidence but a bowl of crow waiting
