The North Carolina Tar Heels landed a solid offensive tackle from the class of 2014 on Friday as Charlotte native Bentley Spain gave the Tar Heels his verbal commitment. Spain is among the top 15 offensive tackles from the 2014 class and is ranked 79th on the FanSided150 Class of 2014 Football Rankings.
The other teams that offered at Spain, but did not get his commitment were the Clemson Tigers, Duke Blue Devils, Florida Gators, LSU Tigers, Maryland Terrapins, Miami (FL) Hurricanes, Michigan Wolverines, North Carolina State Wolfpack, Penn State Nittany Lions, South Carolina Gamecocks, Stanford Cardinal, Vanderbilt Commodores, Virginia Cavaliers, and Virginia Tech Hokies.
It should come as no surprise that the Charlotte, North Carolina native decided to stay in-state to play for the Tar Heels because 27 out of the 28 recruiting experts on 247Sports’ Crystal Ball picked UNC to gain his commitment.
Bentley Spain is a solid pickup for North Carolina at the offensive tackle position. At 6’6″, 275 pounds, Spain has the size and frame that Division I football programs want on their offensive lines.
He is also an effective pass blocking who packs a punch off the line of scrimmage.
Spain’s commitment is No. 19 overall for the Tar Heels and moves their class to 15th overall (up 4 spots) in the 247 Sports class rankings. UNC’s class also ranks 13th in the nation, according to Rivals.com.
The four-star recruit is currently ranked 5th in the state of North Carolina, 12th among offensive tackles, and 120th among 2014 high school recruits by 247Sports.
