On Wednesday, 2014 wide receiver Cameron Phillips gave his verbal commitment to Frank Beamer and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Phillips is a four-star recruit and is ranked as one of the Top 50 wide receivers from the 2014 recruiting class.
The other teams that offered at the Hyattsville, MD native, but did not get his commitment were the Connecticut Huskies, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, North Carolina Tar Heels, Old Dominion Monarchs, Penn State Nittany Lions, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Temple Owls, Virginia Cavaliers, West Virginia Mountaineers, and Wisconsin Badgers.
This commitment might come as a surprise to some recruiting experts because most of the recruiting experts were predicting Phillips to commit to Virginia instead.
Only two out of the eight experts on the 247Sports Crystal Ball predicted the Hokies to land Cameron Phillips.
Phillips is a overall talented wide receiver and is a quality pickup for Frank Beamer and his squad. He’s quick, has good hands, contains great ball skills, and can change directions. Above all, he is an impeccable route runner and is one of the most agile recruits from the 2014 class.
Phillips’ commitment is No. 19 overall for the Hokies and moves their class to 15th overall in the 247 Sports class rankings. VT’s class also ranks 26th in the nation, according to Rivals.com.
The four-star recruit is currently ranked 7th in the state of Maryland and 42nd among wide receivers by 247Sports.
