The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Head Coach Brian Kelly picked up a big-time commitment from the state of Florida on Friday night as Richard Yeargin III pledged to the Irish.
Yeargin is rated as a four-star, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, and is the 20th ranked outside linebacker in the country. He chose the Fighting Irish over the Florida Gators, Ohio State Buckeyes and Auburn Tigers, among others.
The 6-4, 225 pound athlete adds to what has become the hybrid position on defense in college football as many players can play defensive end and outside linebacker because of their exceptional athleticism. Yeargin is one of those players with a long, rangy frame and the ability to pass rush off the edge as well as drop back in pass coverage depending on the defensive play call.
One thing that he will need to improve upon is his 4.98 40-yard dash speed. If he can continue to add weight to his frame as well as continue to develop his speed and quickness, Yeargin could become an elite pass rusher for the Irish.
Yeargin is commitment No. 16 for the Fighting Irish and their class is currently ranked at No. 7 in the nation in the class of 2014, according to 247Sports. Yeargin is just the second outside linebacker for Notre Dame in this year’s class joining fellow three-star commit Greer Martini.
