The Notre Dame Fighting Irish narrowly escaped Navy on Saturday night for a big home win, but they also came up big off the field in recruiting as 2014 four-star cornerback Nick Watkins verbally committed to the Irish over Alabama, Arkansas and Auburn.
Watkins is rated as the No. 11 overall cornerback in the nation and the 17th best player from the state of Texas for the class of 2014, according to the 247Sports composite player rankings.
The Texas native named the home-state Texas Longhorns as his leader back on Aug. 28, but it was an unofficial visit to South Bend on Oct. 4 and an official visit this past weekend that gave Notre Dame the edge for the talented defensive back.
The 6-1, 185 pounder has incredible length and instincts in the secondary to go along with 4.5 forty-yard dash speed. His quickness and ability to break and balls and make plays in the air will give him the opportunity to get on the field early and often at the next level in South Bend as long as his tackling continues to improve.
With the commitment of Watkins, the Fighting Irish now have the No. 8 overall class in the nation for 2014 with 17 commitments.
Watkins is the 13th four-star prospect that the Irish currently have committed in the class, according to 247Sports, and he is the only cornerback verbally pledged in their current class as well.
